ABSTRACT Wild birds have great prominence in the transmission of diseases to humans, mainly due to their ease of access to human populations, raising concerns about the potential impact of that proximity on public health. The present study reports ARV and PBV occurrence in wild birds from an environmental protection area in the Amazon biome, in Pará state, Brazil. We obtained 155 fecal specimens from 47 species of wild birds for RNA extraction, ARV and PBV detection utilizing molecular methods, nucleotide sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. ARV prevalence was 0.6% (1/155), being positive in an individual of Myrmotherula longipennis, and PBV prevalence was 1.29% (2/155), affecting two individuals of Guira guira. The PBV strains were assigned to genogroup I based on phylogenetic analysis, and they shared a strong phylogenetic link with strains isolated from different geographic locations. The ARV strain was more closely related to strains that had previously circulated in the same region. The presence of ARV and PBV in this habitat suggests that infection cycles of these agents occur naturally in the wild ecosystem, potentially triggering transmission events between bird species and humans. This is the first study on ARV detection in wild birds in Brazil and the first report on the occurrence of PBV in wild Guira guira. Additional studies are required to determine the epidemiology, origin, evolution, and emergence of new potentially pathogenic viruses in the Amazon.

RESUMO As aves silvestres têm grande destaque na transmissão de doenças ao homem, principalmente pela facilidade de acesso à população humana, levantando preocupações sobre o potencial impacto dessa proximidade no contexto da saúde pública. O presente estudo relata a ocorrência de ARV e PBV em aves silvestres de uma área de proteção ambiental no bioma Amazônico. Obtivemos 155 espécimes fecais de 47 espécies de aves silvestres, que foram submetidos a extração de RNA, detecção de ARV e PBV por técnicas moleculares, sequenciamento nucleotídico e análise filogenética. A prevalência de infecção por ARV foi 0,6% (1/155), sendo positivo em um indivíduo de Myrmotherula longipennis, e a prevalência de PBV foi 1,29% (2/155), afetando dois insdivíduos de Guira guira. A análise filogenética agrupou as cepas de PBV no genogrupo I, mostrando intensa relação filogenética com cepas isoladas de outras regiões geográficas. A cepa de ARV esteve mais relacionada filogeneticamente a cepas previamente circulantes na mesma região. Este é o primeiro estudo sobre detecção de ARV em aves silvestres no Brasil e o primeiro relato sobre a ocorrência de PBV em Guira guira. A circulação de ARV e PBV nesse ambiente demonstra que os ciclos desses agentes estão ocorrendo de forma natural no ecossistema silvestre, o que pode desencadear possíveis eventos de transmissão entre as espécies aviárias e humanos. Estudos adicionais são necessários para determinar a epidemiologia, origem, evolução e surgimento de novos vírus potencialmente patogênicos na Amazônia.

ABSTRACT: The cryopreservation of plant germplasm at ultralow temperatures is an alternative technique for the long-term storage of seeds of the genus Coffea sp. However, for this technique to be successful, cell integrity must be maintained at all stages of the process on the basis of scientific research. The present study investigated validated cryopreservation protocols for Coffea arabica L. seeds and evaluate the effects on the physiological and biochemical characteristics of the seeds at each stage of the process. Seeds were dried on silica gel or with saturated saline solution, precooled or not in a biofreezer, immersed in nitrogen, and reheated in a water bath. After each of these steps, the physiological and biochemical quality of the seeds was determined. Pre-cooling is a step that can be dispensed with in the cryopreservation of Coffea arabica seeds, direct immersion in liquid nitrogen being more indicated. Coffea arabica L. seeds tolerate cryopreservation after rapid drying in silica gel up to water contents of 17 or 20% (wb), with greater survival at 17%. The enzyme activities of catalase, polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase are indicators of the quality of C. arabica L. seeds subjected to cryopreservation.

RESUMO: A criopreservação de germoplasma vegetal em temperaturas ultrabaixas é uma alternativa para o armazenamento em longo prazo de sementes do gênero Coffea sp. Entretanto, para que essa técnica apresente sucesso, a realização de pesquisas que garantam a manutenção da integridade celular em todas as etapas do processo é de fundamental importância. O objetivo com o presente trabalho foi investigar protocolos de criopreservação validados para sementes de Coffea arabica L., avaliando separadamente, os efeitos sobre as características fisiológicas e bioquímicas das sementes, em cada etapa do processo. As sementes foram secadas em sílica gel ou em solução salina saturada, submetidas ou não ao pré-resfriamento em biocongelador, em seguida imersas no nitrogênio e reaquecidas em banho-maria. Após cada uma dessas etapas, a qualidade fisiológica e bioquímica das sementes foi determinada. O pré-resfriamento é uma etapa que pode ser dispensada na criopreservação de sementes de Coffea arabica, sendo mais indicada a imersão direta em nitrogênio líquido. Sementes de Coffea arabica L. toleram a criopreservação após secagem rápida em sílica gel até teores de água de 17 ou 20% (wb), com maior sobrevivência a 17%. A atividade das enzimas catalase, polifenoloxidase e peroxidase são indicadoras da qualidade de sementes de Coffea arabica L. submetidas à criopreservação.

BACKGROUND Leishmania RNA virus 1 (LRV1) is commonly found in South American Leishmania parasites belonging to the subgenus Viannia, whereas Leishmania RNA virus 2 (LRV2) was previously thought to be restricted to the Old-World pathogens of the subgenus Leishmania. OBJECTIVES In this study, we investigated the presence of LRV2 in strains of Leishmania (L.) infantum, the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), originating from different hosts, clinical forms, and geographical regions. METHODS A total of seventy-one isolates were screened for LRV2 using semi-nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) targeting the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) gene. FINDINGS We detected LRV2 in two L. infantum isolates (CUR268 and HP-EMO) from canine and human cases, respectively. MAIN CONCLUSIONS To the best of our knowledge, this is the first detection of LRV2 in the New World.

Abstract This work was carried out in order to evaluate the initial growth in different conditions of shadings of the species Copernicia alba, Copernicia hospita and Copernicia macroglossa. Initially the seed were soaked in water to a pre-germination, afterward were sowed in tubes (288 ml) filled with substrate (sandy loam + organic compost + vermiculite) in proportion 2:1:1 and kept in full sun, 30%, 50% e 70% shading. It was adopted the completely randomized design, with five repetitions (4 plants/repetition) and five periods of evaluation: 45, 90, 135, 180 and 225 days after sowing, with the factors disposed in a spli-splot measured over time (4 shading levels x 5 evaluation times). Each period of evaluation were measured the following variables: number of leaves, height, stem diameter, foliar area, dry mass of aerial parts and roots, Dickson of quality index. The seedling of Copernicia cultivated in full sun and 30% shading express positive effects in the initial growth with good quality. The largest leaf areas of the species were found in the environment with 30% shading. In face of these results, the obtained data are important and indispensable to establishment of seedling production of quality of Copernicia.

Resumo Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar o crescimento inicial em diferentes condições de sombreamento das espécies Copernicia alba, Copernicia hospita e Copernicia macroglossa. Inicialmente, as sementes foram embebidas em água para uma pré-germinação, em seguida foram semeadas em tubetes (288 ml) preenchidos com substrato (arisco + composto orgânico + vermiculita) na proporção de 2:1:1 e mantidas a pleno sol, 30%, 50% e 70% de sombreamento. Adotou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 5 repetições (4 plantas/repetição) e cinco períodos de avaliação 45, 90, 135, 180 e 225 dias após a semeadura, com fatores dispostos em arranjo de parcelas subdivididas no tempo (4 níveis de sombreamento x 5 épocas de avaliação). A cada época de avaliação, foram mensuradas as seguintes variáveis respostas: número de folhas, altura, diâmetro do coleto, área foliar, massa seca das partes aéreas e das raízes e índice de qualidade de Dickson. As mudas de Copernicia cultivadas em pleno sol e 30% de sombreamento expressam efeitos positivos no crescimento inicial com boa qualidade. Os melhores resultados de área foliar das espécies foram encontrados no ambiente com 30% de sombreamento. Diante desses resultados, os dados obtidos são importantes e indispensáveis ao estabelecimento de produção de mudas de qualidade de Copernicia.

ABSTRACT Irrigation is essential for the development of crops in regions with scarcity or irregular rainfall distribution, enabling high productivity. However, the use of water resources and electrical energy leads to a concern with irrigation efficiency. Pressure demand varies during the operations of irrigation systems and the appropriate pressure can be regulated by variable-frequency drives for the power supply of the motor-pump set. This study aimed to analyze the technical and economic feasibility of using a variable-frequency drive to adjust the pressure in subunits of micro-irrigation systems. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the electrical power consumed in each irrigated subunit for different slopes and the application or not of the variable-frequency drive. Thus, an economic analysis was carried out considering the electricity tariff for group B and rural consumer class, as well as different annual irrigation times. The results showed the potential for energy saving with the use of the variable-frequency drive. Thus, the economic analysis showed that the variable-frequency drive was a better alternative than the dissipative method.

RESUMO Objetivou-se neste estudo quantificar o efeito de variações da temperatura da água na vazão de fitas gotejadoras colapsáveis, de parede fina, com emissores integrados não regulados. Os ensaios foram conduzidos em laboratório utilizando estrutura de ensaios automatizada. Foram realizados ensaios para determinação das curvas vazão-pressão sob temperaturas de ensaio na faixa de 20 a 50 ºC, para nove modelos de emissores com três espessuras de parede (6, 8 e 9 MIL). Curvas vazão-pressão apresentaram distintos parâmetros K e x para cada temperatura. Para os emissores planos de fluxo turbulento (x < 0,5), a vazão diminuiu com o incremento da temperatura. Para os emissores contínuos de fluxo turbulento, respostas diferentes foram obtidas, sendo que no emissor D (x > 0,5) a vazão aumentou com o incremento da temperatura, enquanto no emissor C (x < 0,5), a vazão diminuiu e as maiores variações de vazão ocorreram a partir de 60 kPa. Para o emissor moldado, a vazão aumentou em função da temperatura, porém, a maior variação ocorreu nas menores pressões. Para nenhum dos emissores houve diferença significativa na variação de vazão entre as espessuras de parede.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of water temperature variations on the discharge of collapsible thin-walled drip tapes with integrated non-pressure-compensating emitters. The tests were conducted in the laboratory using an automated test bench. Tests were performed to determine the discharge-pressure curves by varying the water temperature from 20 to 50 °C. Nine emitter models of three wall thicknesses (6, 8, and 9 MIL) were evaluated. The coefficients K and x of the discharge-pressure curves varied according to the water temperature. In flat emitters of turbulent flow (x < 0.5), the discharge decreased as the temperature increased. In the welded emitters of turbulent flow, several responses were observed. Regarding emitter D (x > 0.5), the discharge increased as the temperature was increased, while for emitter C (x < 0.5), the discharge decreased; the highest discharge variations occurred at pressures higher than 60 kPa. For embossed emitters, the discharge increased as a function of temperature, however, the greatest variation occurred at the lowest pressures. None of the emitters showed significant difference in the discharge variation due to wall thicknesses.

Resumo: O condicionamento fisiológico é utilizado para uniformizar e aumentar a velocidade de desenvolvimento de lotes de sementes. Essa técnica é essencial na cafeicultura, pois a cultura apresenta baixa longevidade associada à germinação lenta e desuniforme. O objetivo foi avaliar a influência do condicionamento fisiológico na qualidade fisiológica de sementes de café armazenadas com diferentes teores de água. Sementes de duas cultivares Coffea arabica: cv. Catuaí Vermelho IAC144 e Topázio MG1190. Uma porção das sementes foram secas a sombra até 12% e a outra parte não passou por processo de secagem. As sementes foram armazenadas em câmara fria a 10 °C durante nove meses. A cada três meses de armazenamento, foi realizada a técnica de condicionamento fisiológico, com posterior avaliação da qualidade fisiológica pelos testes de germinação, protrusão radicular, plântulas normais aos quinze dias, plântulas normais fortes, plântulas com folhas cotiledonares expandidas e massa seca de plântulas. As sementes que não passaram pelo processo de secagem e submetidas ao condicionamento fisiológico, mantêm a qualidade fisiológica após nove meses de armazenamento. O condicionamento fisiológico é prejudicial às sementes secas armazenadas durante nove meses.

Abstract: The physiological priming has been used to standardize and increase the speed of development of seed lots. The use of this technique is essential in coffee cultivation, as the crop has low longevity associated with slow and uneven germination. The objective was to evaluate the effect of physiological priming on the physiological quality of coffee seeds stored with different water contents. Seeds of two cultivars of Coffea arabica were used: cv. Catuaí Vermelho IAC144 and Topázio MG1190. A portion of the seeds were dried in the shade until reaching 12% moisture, and the other did not undergo drying. The seeds were stored in a cold chamber at 10 °C for nine months. Every three months, the physiological priming technique was performed with subsequent evaluation of the physiological quality by germination tests, root protrusion, normal seedlings at fifteen days, strong normal seedlings, seedlings with expanded cotyledonary leaves and seedling dry weight. Seeds that did not undergo drying subjected to the physiological priming technique maintained physiological quality after nine months of storage. Physiological priming was detrimental to dry seeds stored for nine months.

Resumo Os domínios fitogeográficos Atlântico e dos Cerrados brasileiros destacam-se pelo alto grau de ameaça de seus remanescentes, fazendo com que o estudo de sua ecologia seja de suma importância para a conservação desses domínios. Apesar da existência de distúrbios ecológicos naturais, a ação humana pode agravar a ocorrência desses fenômenos, como por exemplo: o aumento da frequência do fogo em ambientes naturais. Mesmo o dossel, camada superior da vegetação, é prejudicado direta ou indiretamente pela ação desse distúrbio. Além disso, as características do dossel são determinantes para a dinâmica de regeneração das comunidades vegetais, pois suas condições regulam os níveis de luminosidade que chegam às camadas inferiores da vegetação. Assim, este trabalho buscou estudar as variações na abertura do dossel de um mosaico vegetacional inserido em uma área de contato entre os domínios Atlântico e dos Cerrados, com o intuito de identificar como se dão essas alterações entre as tipologias vegetais analisadas e qual a influência da ocorrência de fogo nas oscilações no estrato superior da vegetação. Para isso, o estudo acompanhou as mudanças na abertura do dossel, com o uso de fotografias hemisféricas, em diferentes unidades vegetacionais por três anos, a partir da ocorrência de um evento de fogo no local. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que fitofisionomias semelhantes apresentaram níveis de abertura do dossel parecidos, da mesma forma que exibiram um padrão de oscilação similar entre si. Por fim, depreende-se que o fogo se mostrou como um modificador indireto do dossel, uma vez que as próprias características da vegetação têm a capacidade de controlar os impactos desse tipo de distúrbio.

Abstract Atlantic and Brazilian savanna phytogeographic domains stand out the high level of threating from forest remnants, making the ecological study of these important areas for both the Domains conservation. In nature, disturbances events are common, but human activities can aggravate the occurrence of these phenomena, for example, increasing the frequency of fire events in natural environments. Even the higher layer in the forest, the canopy, suffers directly and indirectly affected by this disturbance. Besides, canopies characteristics are decisive factor acting in the regeneration dynamics of vegetal community, regulating luminosity that reach inferior low layers of vegetation. This study aims to capture the variations in canopy gaps in an ecotone area between Savanna and Atlantic Domains in order to identify how these changes occur between the analyzed vegetation types and which is the fire influence in the upper layer of the forest. We captured variations in the forest gaps after a fire event utilizing hemispheric photos. The photos have been taking for three years in an interval of six months. We found out that similar phytophysiognomies showed similar levels of canopy coverage and displayed an oscillation pattern. Finally, it appears that fire proved to be an indirect modifier of the canopy, since the characteristics of the vegetation itself have the ability to control the impacts of this type of disturbance.

RESUMO Técnicas de fluido dinâmica computacional (CFD) se tornaram uma importante ferramenta para estudos e estimativas relacionadas ao escoamento de fluidos em diversos processos industriais e de engenharia. Nas últimas duas décadas, CFD tem sido utilizado para o estudo, projeto e aprimoramento de equipamentos de irrigação. Simulações numéricas podem ser utilizadas para estimativas de escoamento de fluidos, transferência de calor e reações químicas em sistemas complexos. O objetivo desta revisão é fornecer uma visão geral sobre uso de CFD em aplicações de engenharia de irrigação. O artigo está organizado em duas seções principais: fundamentos sobre CFD e aplicações em engenharia de irrigação. A primeira seção apresenta os principais métodos utilizados para simulação numérica, equações básicas para estimativa de parâmetros de escoamento, recomendações relacionadas a malha utilizada nas simulações, e critérios de convergência de resultados. Na segunda seção, são apresentadas aplicações relacionadas a perda distribuída e localizada de carga em tubulações, simulações de escoamento em labirinto de gotejadores com líquidos e sólidos-líquidos, precipitação de químicos, filtros, aspersores, válvulas reguladoras de pressão e injetores Venturi. As aplicações, embora descritas de modo breve, evidenciam que a modelagem utilizando CFD caracteriza um método que pode ser exato, rápido e viável para o estudo de parâmetros de escoamento em tubulações, conexões, emissores e acessórios de irrigação. As simulações empregando CFD podem ser úteis para o projeto de novos produtos, assim como para o aprimoramento e otimização de produtos existentes. Usos de CFD em engenharia de irrigação devem ser estimulados, especialmente com o propósito de inovação envolvendo parcerias entre a universidade e empresas de irrigação.

ABSTRACT Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques have become an important tool for investigating and predicting flow behavior in many industrial and engineering processes. In the last two decades, CFD has been used for the study, design, and improvement of irrigation equipment. Numerical simulations can be used to predict fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical reactions within complex systems. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of the uses of CFD in irrigation engineering applications. The paper is organized into two main sections: fundamentals of CFD and irrigation engineering applications. The first section presents the main methods used in numerical simulations, basic equations to predict fluid flow parameters, meshing concerns, and convergence criteria. In the second section, we present applications related to friction and local head losses in pipes, liquid and solid-liquid flow simulation in drippers, chemical scaling, filters, sprinklers, direct-acting pressure-regulating valves, and Venturi injectors. The briefly described applications indicated that CFD modeling can be an accurate, quick, and feasible method for the investigation of flow parameters in irrigation pipes, fittings, emitters, and accessories. The CFD simulations can be useful for designing new products as well as for improving and optimizing existing products. Computational fluid dynamics uses in irrigation engineering must be encouraged, particularly for innovation purposes resulting from the cooperation between academia and irrigation companies.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological and biochemical changes related to desiccation tolerance loss in millet seeds. The studied points of the germination process were determined according to the seed imbibition curve of the millet hybrid ADRF6010: control (0h), 3h of imbibition, 1 and 3 mm radicle. The seeds were dried on silica gel for 72h at 20°C, followed by pre-humidification at 25°C for 24h. Seed physiological quality was evaluated by electrical conductivity and a germination test, and seed vigor was evaluated with a first germination count and a germination speed index. The experiment was performed in a completely randomized design, and means were compared by the Scott-Knott test at a 5% probability. The enzymatic systems of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and α-amylase, as well as the expression of heat-resistant proteins were evaluated. Enzymatic activity was quantified with the ImageJ® software. Millet seeds lost desiccation tolerance when the radicle reached 1 mm in length. According to enzymatic standards, peroxidase and α-amylase activity, as well as heat-resistant protein activity, were related to desiccation tolerance loss in millet seeds.

RESUMO A variabilidade espacial dos atributos físicos do solo é importante para indicar o manejo localizado, em áreas agrícolas. Objetivou-se analisar correlações espaciais entre o rendimento de grãos de soja e atributos da relação massa/volume do solo, visando a selecionar qual atributo está correlacionado com o rendimento, bem como avaliar a variabilidade espacial dos atributos do solo e componentes de produção desta cultura, em Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico manejado sob plantio direto. Os atributos do solo analisados (0,0-0,10 m e 0,10-0,20 m) foram: densidade (métodos do anel volumétrico e do torrão parafinado), densidade de partícula (métodos do balão volumétrico e do balão volumétrico modificado) e porosidade total. Os componentes de produção da soja avaliados foram: rendimento de grãos, número de vagens por planta, número de grãos por vagem, massa de cem grãos, massa de grãos por planta, população de plantas e estatura de plantas. A porosidade total do solo, calculada pela relação entre a densidade do solo (método anel volumétrico) e a densidade de partícula (método do balão volumétrico), na camada de 0,10-0,20 m, foi o melhor indicador de rendimento de grãos de soja sob plantio direto.

ABSTRACT The spatial variability of soil physical attributes is important to indicate management practices that best suit agricultural areas. This study aimed to analyze spatial correlations between soybean grain yield and soil mass-volume relationships, in order to select which attribute is correlated with yield, as well as to evaluate the spatial variability of soil attributes and yield components of this crop, in an Oxisol under no-tillage system. The soil attributes analyzed (0.0-0.10 m and 0.10-0.20 m) were the following ones: soil bulk density (paraffin-coated clod and volumetric ring methods), particle density (volumetric flask and modified volumetric flask methods) and total porosity. The soybean yield components were evaluated as it follows: grain yield, number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, mass of 100 grains, grain mass per plant, plant population and plant height. The total soil porosity, calculated by the relations between the bulk density (volumetric ring method) and particle density (volumetric flask), in the 0.10-0.20 m layer, was the best indicator of soybean grain yield under no-tillage conditions.

RESUMO Este estudo objetivou caracterizar a dinâmica, além das mudanças estruturais e florísticas em uma comunidade arbórea de Floresta Estacional Decidual, no Norte de Minas Gerais no intervalo de cinco anos. Em 2005, foram alocadas 10 parcelas de 20x20m. Os indivíduos com CAP ≥ 10 cm foram marcados com etiquetas numeradas e mensurados. Em 2010, no segundo inventário, foram incorporados os recrutas, registrados os mortos e remedidos os sobreviventes. Em 2005 foram registradas 46 espécies, e em 2010 foram 45 espécies. O índice de Shannon-Wienner (H’ = 2,62 nats ind-1 em 2005; H’ = 2,60 nats ind-1 em 2010) e a equabilidade de Pielou (J = 0,683 em 2005; J = 0,682 em 2010) não apresentaram diferenças significativas. Foram registrados ao todo 57 indivíduos mortos, com taxa de mortalidade média de 1,64% ano-1. Enquanto ocorreram 18 recrutas, apresentando taxa de recrutamento médio de 0,53% ano-1. Apesar da maior mortalidade, em comparação com o recrutamento, os resultados sugerem que a comunidade se manteve estável tanto em termos estruturais e de diversidade no intervalo considerado.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize the dynamics, structural changes and floristics of a Northern Minas Gerais Seasonally Deciduous Forest tree community, in a 5 year interval. In 2005, 10 (20 x 20m) plots were allocated. All trees (CBH ≥ 10 cm) were tagged and measured. A second census was carried out in 2010 in order to measure surviving, new recruits and dead trees. In 2005, 46 species were recorded, moving to 45 in 2010. No significant differences were found for Shannon - diversity (H’ = 2.62 nats ind-1 in 2005; H’ = 2.60 nats ind-1 in 2010) and Pielou eveness (J = 0.683 in 2005; J = 0.682 in 2010) in the interval. A total of 57 dead records (rate of 1.64% year-1) were found whereas 18 trees were recruited (rate of 0.53% year-1). Despite the higher mortality as compared to recruitment, the results suggest that the community remained stable in both structural and diversity terms in the interval considered.

Resumo: O teste de envelhecimento artificial tem se destacado como um método eficiente para avaliar o vigor de lotes de sementes e para estimar o potencial de armazenamento dos mesmos. Assim, este trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar a associação entre o envelhecimento artificial e o armazenamento natural de sementes de café, por meio da correlação via análise de fatores. Foram utilizadas sementes de quatro cultivares de Coffea arabica L. e uma de Coffea canephora Pierre. Parte das sementes recém-colhidas foi envelhecida em câmara de crescimento do tipo BOD sob condições controladas de temperatura e umidade relativa (42 ºC e 100% UR) por períodos de 0, 4, 6, 8 e 10 dias. A outra parte das sementes foi armazenada em embalagens de papel trifoliado por um período de 2, 4 e 6 meses em armazém, em ambiente não controlado. O envelhecimento artificial prediz a armazenabilidade de sementes de café, sendo os tempos de envelhecimento artificial dependentes das cultivares.

Abstract: The accelerated aging test is recognized as an efficient method for evaluating the vigor of seed lots and for estimating their storage potential. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the association between artificial aging and natural storage of coffee seeds, through the correlation factor analysis. Seeds of four cultivars of Coffea arabica L. (Catuaí Amarelo, Arara, Catiguá, and Mundo Novo) and one of Coffea canephora Pierre (Apoatã) were used. Part of the newly-harvested seeds were aged in a growth chamber under controlled temperature and relative humidity conditions (42 ºC and 100% RH) for periods of 0, 4, 6, 8, and 10 days. The other part of the seeds was stored in tri-wall paper packaging for a period of 2, 4, and 6 months in a non-climate-controlled environment. Artificial aging allows predictions on the storage potential of coffee seeds, although the artificial aging periods depend on the cultivars.

RESUMO A caatinga corresponde a um dos dois maiores núcleos das Florestas Tropicais Sazonalmente Secas (FTSS) e se encontra totalmente inserida no território brasileiro. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a estrutura de dois micro-habitats relacionando-a com as variáveis ambientais. Foram alocadas 24 parcelas, nas quais mensuramos o CAP e fizemos a identificação botânica de todos os indivíduos arbóreos com CAP ≥ 10 cm. Com a presença de lajedos de calcário na área, foi possível distinguir dois micro-habitats. A CCA e a análise de espécies indicadoras mostraram uma nítida distribuição das espécies de acordo com os micro-habitats. Concluímos que a presença dos lajedos de calcário proporcionou a formação dos micro-habitats, influenciando na distribuição e composição das espécies arbustiva-arbóreas, caracterizando a unidade fitoecológica aqui denominada como “furados”.

ABSTRACT Caatinga represents one of the two major centers of Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests (SDTF) and is completely inserted in the Brazilian territory. The present work aimed to evaluate the structure of two micro-environments and relate them to environmental variables. Twenty 20 × 20 m plots were placed in which we measured the height and CBH and made the botanical identification of all trees with CBH ≥10 cm. The CCA and indicator species analysis presented a clear distribution of species according to the micro-environments. We concluded that the presence of limestone slabs provided the formation of microhabitats, thus influencing the distribution and composition of tree species, what characterized the phytoecological unit here referred as “furados”.

Resumo Introdução: A hipertensão arterial sistêmica representa um importante problema de saúde pública na contemporaneidade, pois tem alta prevalência em todo o mundo. Objetivo: Investigar a situação da hipertensão arterial sistêmica em escolares de 6 a 10 anos no município de Divinópolis, MG, Brasil e fatores associados. Método: Este estudo tem caráter epidemiológico de corte transversal, descritivo e analítico, cuja população foi de crianças de 6 a 10 anos matriculadas em escolas públicas municipais de Divinópolis, MG, Brasil. A coleta dos dados foi realizada no período de outubro de 2014 a maio de 2015. Regressões lineares e logísticas multivariadas foram utilizadas para testar associações entre pressão arterial, variáveis socioeconômicas, antropométricas, alimentares e atividade física. Resultados: A prevalência de hipertensão arterial foi de 15,2% em uma amostra de 284 crianças, cujos dados forneceram valores médio de pressão arterial sistólica de 101,7 (±13,2) mmHg e de pressão arterial diastólica de 66,0 (±11,2) mmHg. O percentual de gordura corporal apresentou diferenças significativas entre os sexos, sendo 24,2% e 26,2% de gordura corporal, respectivamente, para meninos e meninas. Foram encontradas associações significativas entre níveis pressóricos, peso corporal, índice de massa corporal, circunferência de cintura, percentual de gordura corporal, consumo de iogurte, carne bovina/frango, feijão, iogurte, pizzas, sanduíches e algumas variáveis comportamentais. Conclusão: Os dados apresentados revelam aspectos importantes relativos ao perfil de escolares na faixa etária de 6 a 10 anos, especialmente relacionados ao comportamento da pressão arterial.

Summary Introduction: Hypertension is a major public health problem in contemporary times and it has high prevalence throughout the world. Objective: To investigate the situation of Systemic Arterial Hypertension in schoolchildren aged 6 to 10 years in Divinópolis/MG-Brazil and associated factors. Method: This is a cross-sectional, epidemiological, descriptive and analytical study, whose population was children aged 6 to 10 years enrolled in public schools in Divinópolis-MG-Brazil. Data collection was conducted from October 2014 to May 2015. Multivariate linear regressions were used to test associations between blood pressure, socioeconomic, anthropometric, dietary and physical activity. Results: The prevalence of hypertension was 15.2% in a sample of 284 children and mean values of systolic blood pressure of 101.7 (±13.2) mmHg and diastolic blood pressure of 66.0 (±11.2) mmHg. The body fat percentage showed significant differences between the genders, with 24.2 and 26.2%, respectively for boys and girls. Significant associations were made between blood pressure levels, body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, body fat percentage, consumption of yogurt, beef /chicken, beans, pizza, sandwich and some behaviors variables. Conclusion: The presented data show important aspects of school profile in the age range 6-10 years, especially related to the behavior of blood pressure.
